A sump plug is also commonly known as an oil drain plug. Other terms, less frequently used, include oil pan plug or sump bolt. These names all refer to the same threaded plug located at the bottom of the engine's oil sump (or oil pan) used to drain the engine oil. Its primary function is to seal the oil pan and allow for the oil to be drained during an oil change.
